Are Pomeranians Good Family Dogs?

You might be thinking, do Pomeranians make good pets? Knowing the pros and cons is paramount before taking the ownership plunge if you are interested in this breed.

Poms are delightfully alive and aware of everything going on around them. This adorable little breed won't meekly submit to rough handling and is not a good choice for kids.

The Good Things About Pomeranian Dogs:

We have listed below some reasons why Pomeranians make good pets:

  • Unparalleled beauty: Dog lovers can’t get over the cuteness of a Pomeranian. They don’t mind showing great patience when training a Pom pup.
  • Small and convenient size: Weighing around 3 to 7 pounds, Pomeranians are super small and convenient. Pomeranians are suitable for apartment living due to their small size. More than that, you can easily carry them around, take them on walks, and drive them in your car without any problem.
  • Affectionate: A Pomeranian puppy is affectionate and fond of human interaction. They love cuddling, being around their humans, and making superb family dogs.
  • Playful: Pomeranians are highly playful and always begging for a game. Fetch, backyard agility, and ball games will keep them stimulated and engaged. They enjoy playing with their human companions and must be involved in several activities.
  • Intelligent: Pomeranians are incredibly intelligent and learn things very quickly. They require challenges and a lot of mental stimulation.
  • Low drooling potential: Pomeranians have a low drooling potential. So, these small dogs are perfect if you dislike being covered by slobber spots on your clothes.
  • Tolerance for hot and cold weather: Pomeranians have a moderate tolerance for hot and cold weather. However, being a small dog, you must protect them from extreme heat and cold.
  • Good canine social skills: Pomeranians enjoy the company of other dogs and are not reactive toward other pets. This is especially true if your Pom has been raised with other larger dogs since puppyhood. However, they can be defensive if they feel threatened. Poms and cats usually don't have problems with one another. However, close supervision is advised.
  • A long-living companion: One of the biggest pluses of having a Pomeranian is its long lifespan. The average lifespan of Poms is around 15 years. However, some of them live up to 18 or even 20 years!
  • Easy to train: This dog breed is relatively easy to train if you are consistent and put in the work to teach your dog how to behave.

The Not-so-good Things About Pomeranians

Here's the not-so-good side of owning a Pomeranian.

  • Need extra caution: Being small also means increased fragility. The Pomeranian is a part of the ‘toy’ group, which covers all the toy breeds. Being a small dog requires a lot of care and caution from the owners. Because of their small size, it’s always important to watch your Pomeranian and ensure they aren’t in danger of being hurt. You need to be extra vigilant because if you or your kid accidentally drop the pup, there is a greater chance of injury. Also, unpredictable movements and loud voices can lead to fear and stress in your Pom.
  • The coat needs care: Pomeranians’ thick and glamorous coat is exquisite, but there is a downside: shedding. While they shed, regular brushing and grooming can help keep their fur under control. You need to be okay with this!
  • The watchdog syndrome: Although small, Poms are keen watchdogs and take their job seriously. They are quick to react and are always suspicious. They will sound an alarm if they find someone dubious around the house. However, you can teach your Pom to control their watchdog-like reactions with training and socialization.
  • Separation anxiety: Being left alone is not the Pomeranian’s favorite thing. In fact, they don’t like it much at all. This is a little social dog who wants to be around its people. If you leave for long hours, your Pom might pass the time by barking, whining, and yapping.
  • Mind of their own: Most Pomeranians are not submissive dogs and have a stubborn streak. They are very bright but have an independent mind and can be manipulative. You must show them, through consistency, that you mean what you say.

Being cute as a button makes it easy to forgive all the "issues" these little fur buddies may incur.

Like all dogs, Pomeranians need early socialization and exposure to different people, animals, and places. This will ensure that a Pom puppy grows into a well-rounded dog.
