History of the Miniature Pomeranian 

Pomeranians were developed from dogs imported by Queen Charlotte into England. The dogs came from Pomerania and were descended from the ancient spitz-type dogs of the Arctic. Early Pomeranians weighed as much as 30 pounds.

Before 1908 a Miniature Pomeranian was classed as weighing under 8lbs. Poms over 8lbs were officially classified as Pomeranians.

In 1909 the weights were changed to Pomeranians being over 7lbs and Pomeranian Miniatures weighing under 7lbs. 1910 saw a new standard drawn up for Pomeranian Miniatures with the weight reduced to between 4 and 5 lbs.

In 1915 Miniature Pomeranians ceased to officially exist. The Kennel Club withdrew the challenges for the over-weight Pomeranians. The 2 sizes were now competing against each other, and the breed has been known authoritatively since this time as just the Pomeranian.

In the case of Miniature Pomeranians, their temperament will be exactly the same as that of any normal-sized Pomeranian, because both are of the same breed. 

Miniature Pomeranians are intelligent, loving, and playful dogs that are devoted to their family. Miniature Poms share the following personalities: 

• Affectionate

Miniature Pomeranian is a loving and affectionate dog. They desire your attention and admiration but offer unconditional love to their owners. Miniature Pomeranians enjoy cuddling up next to their owner.  

• Great watchdogs

The Miniature Pomeranians are alert and aware of their surroundings. They are highly protective of their family and make great watchdogs. 

• Intelligent

Miniature Pomeranians are considered highly intelligent dogs. These little guys have a good memory. Miniature Poms need mental stimulation to stay away from mischievous and destructive activities. 

• Barkers

Miniature Pomeranians are vocal dogs with high barking potential. They will bark every time someone approaches. You can train them to stop excessive barking and to avoid unpleasant situations.

Even though they are eager to please, Miniature Poms have a stubborn and independent nature.

Miniature Pomeranians are moderately healthy but are prone to few health issues. The health issues that may affect Mini Poms are:

• Prone to injury: Miniature Pomeranians are far more fragile than the normal-sized Pomeranians. With such a low weight and tiny size, Miniature Pomeranians are much more prone to injuries.

• Collapsing Trachea: Collapsing trachea is a genetic problem that happens when the trachea of the Miniature Pomeranian becomes narrow due to the softening of the cartilage that holds the windpipe. Avoid putting too much stress on your Mini Pom’s neck by opting to use a harness and leash.

• Hypothermia: Miniature Poms are much more likely to develop hypothermia, especially at a young age. Miniature Pomeranians can experience dangerously low body temperature in events such as illness or exposure to cold temperatures.

• Infections: Miniature Pomeranians are much more likely to catch infections than normal-sized Pomeranians.

• Eye Problems: Eye problems in the Miniature Pomeranians are serious and should not be understated or overlooked. Eye problems include cataracts, Corneal dystrophy, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy.

• Luxating Patellas: Luxating Patellas is a degenerative problem in Miniature Pomeranians due to the looseness of the kneecap. This happens when the muscles and the tendons that hold the kneecap of Miniature Poms in place become very weak. When the kneecap slips, it causes acute pain, lameness in the leg, or an abnormal gait in the Miniature Pomeranians. 

• Epilepsy: This disease refers to abnormal, uncontrolled bursts of electrical activity in your Miniature Pomeranians brain, causing seizures. An epilepsy treatment plan for Miniature Pomeranians reduces seizure frequency and improves their quality of life.

• Allergies: Miniature Pomeranians are prone to a variety of allergies. These little dogs may be allergic to pollens, molds, certain foods, and flea saliva.

• Dental problems: Pomeranians are prone to gum and teeth problems and early tooth loss.

Taking care of Mini Pomeranians involves a lot of things including feeding, grooming, training, and exercises.  

Feeding your Miniature Pomeranian:

Dog owners need to know a good diet and nutrition are important for the health of a small Pomeranian puppy. These dogs thrive and their bodies function optimally if given good nutrition. Good nutrition provides an overall boost in the immune system of your Miniature Pom.

Their diet must be formulated for a small-sized dog breed. They require a diet that is rich in protein, calories, essential minerals, and vitamins. It is also important to keep a feeding schedule and offer a proper amount of food, appropriate to your dog’s age and size.

The food requirements of a Miniature Pomeranian puppy change as they grow up. Clean and fresh water should be available to Miniature Pomeranians at all times.

Training your Miniature Pomeranian

Miniature Pomeranians are highly intelligent but sometimes tend to be stubborn and independent, which makes their training difficult. 

Patience, consistency, and reward-based training methods work best for Miniature Pomeranians. Being a sensitive breed, harsh treatment, punishments, and yelling will make them stubborn.

Here are some tips and techniques for dog training: 

• Begin training early: Early socialization and puppy training classes are important in directing their energy in a positive way.
• Use a reward system: Miniature Pomeranians respond well to positive reinforcement techniques. This should be used as a tool during Mini Pom’s training. Use the treats as a reward during training sessions.
• Consistency is the key: Be consistent with the rules you are setting for your Miniature Pomeranian. 

Spend extra time with your Miniature Pomeranian, beyond the training sessions. Here are some of the training that you need to do with your Miniature Pomeranian puppy:

• Socialization with other people and pets
• Leash training
• Crate training
• House train and potty training
• Basic commands like sit, stay, go, shake-hand, etc.
• Obedience training

Grooming Needs of a Miniature Pomeranian: 

Miniature Pomeranians are moderate shedders and have a luxurious and soft double coat. You can still expect to find a lot of hair around the home.

Grooming your Miniature Pomeranian is a great way to bond with your dog. Here are some grooming tips and techniques for your dog:

• Brushing: The coat of the Miniature Pomeranian will tangle underneath if it is not combed at least twice a week. Regular brushing keeps the coat in good condition and avoids mats or tangles.
• Bathing: Bathe your Miniature Pomeranian when necessary with a good canine shampoo. Frequent bathing strips the coat of oils that keep it healthy. Use clean and warm water, and then towel dry.
• Ear cleaning: Clean the ears as needed with a solution recommended by your vet.
• Nail trimming: Trim the nails every couple of weeks or as needed. This will keep the Miniature Pomeranians’ feet in good condition. Start trimming your Mini Pom’s nails when your dog is very young so that he becomes used to it.
• Teeth brushing: Miniature Pomeranians are prone to dental problems. Inspect your Miniature Pomeranian’s teeth and gums and brush their teeth to prevent tartar buildup.
• Eye cleaning: Check the eyes for redness and excessive discharge and make sure they are clean.

When you groom your Miniature Pomeranian, look inside its mouth and ears for signs of allergies or infection. Your regular grooming and careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. Make grooming a positive experience filled with praise and rewards.

Exercise Requirements of Miniature Pomeranian:

Exercising a tiny puppy should not be a burden for you or your dog. You can meet your Miniature Pomeranian’s exercise requirements by:

The exercise needs of Miniature Pomeranian puppies are quite different. With their still-developing bones and joints, the best exercise for Mini Pomeranian puppies is free to play with age-appropriate toys.

How Do Miniature Pomeranians Relate with Children and other Pets?

Tiny dogs like the teacup Pom and miniature Pomeranian are not suitable for a household with small kids. They are friendly with children but should still be supervised during playtime. It is always recommended to first socialize a Pomeranian puppy with children of the home.

Due to their small size, they are best suited to a family with older kids. You should let kids play with your Mini Pom under supervision. Mistreatment by young kids can be heavy-handed and hurt a Miniature Pomeranian. 

Be sure that any small kid around a Pom is taught how to interact with dogs respectfully and gently. Kids can participate actively in Miniature Pomeranian’s grooming.  

Miniature Pomeranians don’t have great canine social skills. If you already have another pet dog, the Miniature Pomeranian won’t be a great choice. Mini Poms are best suited to a one-dog household.
