If you own a Pomeranian and want to learn how to groom them properly, you’re in the right place. This article, written by Denise Leo, who has been grooming and exhibiting show-winning champion Pomeranians for over 50 years, will guide you through everything you need to know about grooming a Pomeranian — from everyday coat care to professional show-preparation techniques.
So, do Pomeranians need grooming? Absolutely. Their thick double coat — a soft insulating undercoat covered by a layer of longer guard hairs — requires regular maintenance to stay beautiful, healthy, and free from mats. Without proper care, a Pom’s coat can quickly tangle, lose volume, or cause skin irritation.
Whether your goal is to keep your family companion looking neat and comfortable or to achieve the polished, full outline of a show dog, understanding the fundamentals of grooming a Pomeranian for show (and at home) is essential.
In this guide, Denise shares her expert insights on brushing routines, bathing frequency, trimming techniques, and the best tools for your Pom’s unique coat type. With the right knowledge and consistency, grooming your Pomeranian can become an enjoyable bonding experience that keeps your little companion looking and feeling their absolute best year-round.
“Grooming a Pomeranian isn’t just about beauty — it’s also an act of love. Every brushstroke strengthens the bond between you and your little companion.”
— Denise Leo, Preservation Breeder & Pomeranian Expert
Pomeranian Grooming Quick Facts
- Pomeranian grooming is essential to Pom dog ownership and should be done every 1-2 weeks.
- Regular brushing helps maintain a healthy coat, free from tangles or mats that could lead to skin irritation.
- A variety of brushes are available for daily, weekly, or monthly maintenance.
- A slicker brush can help remove excess hair, making grooming easier for both you and your pup.
- Pomeranian owners need to know how to maintain their toy dog’s appearance and cleanliness, and which tools are necessary for an effective Pomeranian grooming kit.
- Pomeranians require regular grooming, at least three times a week, and more frequently during periods of heavy shedding.
- Nails should be kept short.
- The rear end and eye area must also be kept clean.
- The Pomeranian’s bath frequency should be at least once a month during winter and more often in summer, especially if the dog gets dirty.
- New Pomeranian puppy owners should ask their breeder about the bathing requirements for their puppy.
- Show dogs are bathed twice a week and receive a maintenance bath when taking a break from showing.
- Bathing will not soften an incorrect coat, so it is essential to avoid dirt, grime, and talcum powder to keep it clean and promote healthy hair growth.
- When bathing your Pom, use warm water no higher than its elbows; lather with shampoo (preferably oatmeal), rinse well; condition the bottom half of the body, then rinse out; blot dry with towels rather than rubbing vigorously before blowing dry using forced air without heat while brushing simultaneously with a pin brush to make fluffy coat until completely dry – protect eyes/ears throughout the process!
- Spot cleaning areas like the tail area can be done by washing small parts with a damp face washer as required or larger parts in the laundry tub.
- Avoid using human hair dryers due to the risk of skin burns.
- Professional grooming is recommended every four to six weeks, which includes bathing, trimming, brushing, and cleaning the ears/nails/anal glands.
- Grooming should begin early in life, with the pup being taught that it can be enjoyable and best done after exercise or following an evening meal.
Do Pomeranians Need Grooming?
Yes — absolutely! Every dog needs regular grooming, regardless of coat type, size, or shape. But for a Pomeranian, it’s even more important. Their thick, double coat requires consistent attention to keep it healthy, full, and tangle-free.
Ideally, groom your Pomeranian at least three times a week, and more often if possible. During shedding periods, daily grooming helps remove loose undercoat before it forms mats. Regular brushing keeps the coat fluffy and prevents discomfort from trapped hair.
Don’t forget nail care — Pomeranians are active, lively little dogs, and keeping their nails neatly trimmed helps maintain good posture and comfort while moving.
In addition to coat and nail care, always check and clean your Pom’s rear area to prevent soiling or irritation. The same goes for the eyes — gently wipe away any debris or “sleep marks” to keep the face clean and bright.
Routine grooming isn’t just about looks; it’s a vital part of keeping your Pomeranian comfortable, confident, and healthy.

How Often Should I Groom My Pomeranian?
Your Pomeranian should visit a professional groomer every four to six weeks for a complete grooming session. A full session typically includes bathing, trimming, thorough brushing, ear and nail care, and checking and cleaning the anal glands. Regular professional grooming helps maintain coat texture, hygiene, and overall skin health.
Between grooming appointments, it’s essential to maintain your Pom’s coat at home with regular brushing and gentle grooming. Skipping or delaying grooming can cause serious coat problems. Without regular care, the fur can become brittle and matted, the undercoat may compact, and the skin may dry out or become irritated.
The bottom line: consistent grooming keeps your Pomeranian looking beautiful, feeling comfortable, and staying healthy. Whether handled by a professional or done at home, a regular grooming routine is one of the most important parts of Pomeranian care.
Professional Grooming vs. At-Home Grooming
While professional grooming keeps your Pomeranian in top condition, regular at-home maintenance is just as important. Brushing your Pom’s coat several times a week prevents tangles, distributes natural oils, and keeps the coat full and healthy between salon visits.
You can safely handle routine tasks such as:
- Brushing and combing the coat
- Wiping the face and eyes
- Cleaning ears with a gentle solution
- Trimming nails (if you’re confident)
- Checking for mats, debris, or skin irritation
Leave more complex tasks, like styling, trimming, or heavy de-matting, to an experienced professional groomer who understands the Pomeranian’s delicate double coat. A good groomer will maintain the correct coat texture and outline without over-thinning or damaging the undercoat.
The best results come from combining frequent at-home care with regular professional grooming, ensuring your Pomeranian always looks and feels like the little star they are.

How to Groom a Pomeranian Dog
Grooming a Pomeranian is similar in principle to caring for other long-coated breeds, but it requires a gentle and consistent approach to protect the Pom’s delicate double coat. Grooming should be a lifelong routine, starting from puppyhood and continuing throughout your dog’s life.
From an early age, teach your puppy that grooming is a positive and enjoyable experience. Begin with short, calm sessions and plenty of praise or treats. The best time to start brushing a Pomeranian puppy is after exercise or following their evening meal, when they’re naturally relaxed and more likely to sit still.
Regular brushing keeps the coat free from tangles, distributes natural oils, and strengthens the bond between you and your Pom. With patience and consistency, your dog will quickly learn to love grooming time — making it a soothing ritual rather than a struggle.
How Often Should I Bathe My Pomeranian?
The frequency of bathing a Pomeranian is a common question. Owners will ask, “How often should I wash my dog?”
Bathe your Pomeranian regularly. Pet Poms will require bathing at least once a month during winter. It is more ideal during the summer, unless the dog gets dirty.
Giving Pomeranian Puppies a Bath
New Pomeranian puppy owners should ask their breeder about bathing Pomeranian puppies. Instructions are usually required on when to commence bathing and grooming requirements.
At Dochlaggie, grooming for Pomeranians commences at a very early age. Bathing pups older than five or six weeks should have no ill effects, as long as care is taken to ensure the puppy is fully and correctly dried after his bath.
My Pomeranians are bathed twice a week when they are being shown. The day before a show, and once again the day after, remove any grooming products added to the coat at the show.
Whilst enjoying a break from the show ring, the show dogs are given a weekly maintenance bath.
Important Grooming for Pomeranians Information:
- Bathing Pomeranians will not soften a correct coat. Dirt, grime, and talcum powder can easily damage a Dog’s coat.
- Clean hair grows; dirty hair dries out and breaks off. Coats can vary from canine to canine.
- Breeders strive to produce double-coated Poms with a correct standoff and harsh coats. A Pom’s coat may also differ significantly from month to month.

Bathing Pomeranians Instructions
Follow these safety tips:
- Place a non-slip mat on the bottom of the sink to prevent it from slipping. You could even use an old towel for this.
- Use a drain filter to prevent hair from clogging it.
- Ensure your dog won’t knock over the handle and accidentally make the water too hot without you realizing it.
- Protect the eyes and ears.
How to Bathe a Pomeranian
To Prevent Knots and Felting, it is Important to Brush Before Bathing.
- Ensure your Dog is completely brushed and combed through before attempting to bathe him.
- Bath water should be warm and reach no higher than the Pomeranian’s elbows.
- Lather well (using the best shampoo for Pomeranians) on both sides of his body.
- Start at the Pom’s tail area and wash the dog’s head last.
- Always use a sponge on his head and keep the shampoo and conditioner clear of your Dog’s eyes and ears.
- Rinse well with clean, lukewarm water.
- The conditioner is then applied to the bottom half of his body, tail hair, feet, and leg areas, and the conditioner is then rinsed out of his coat.
How to Correctly Dry A Pomeranian
- Place towels around your Pom. Blot dry rather than vigorously rub.
- The coat should then be blown dry.
- Use a dryer that’s forced air, no heat. This will blow at high speed and help dry your dog quicker without burning the skin.
- Please be mindful that human hair dryers can be too hot for your Pom.
- If you must use a human hair dryer, set it to a cool setting and keep a safe distance from your Pomeranian when using it.
- Blow him with the dryer while brushing your Pomeranian with a pin brush.
- Stand dryers are handy and necessary for anyone doing a lot of dog grooming.
Careless owners have been known to place their wet dogs in a crate and then use the dryer on them. Never do it! Numerous dogs have died due to negligence on the part of their owner. The dog can’t get away from the heat within the crate. It’s so dangerous.
Spot Cleaning Dogs’ Fur
Spot-cleaning or wiping down your puppy is essential to keeping your dog clean. A dog’s coat can often get soiled from tiny splashes of urine, and Poms usually have issues with feces sticking to the dog’s fur in the tail area.
Small areas can be cleaned with a damp face washer as often as required for cleanliness. Larger parts of the dog’s fur, such as the bottom, that usually require cleaning might need a quick wash in the laundry tub.
How to Make Your Pomeranian Fluffy?
- This is easily achieved by brushing your Pomeranian while also using a dryer.
- The best results are obtained from working on one small section at a time.
- Start by drying the underneath, then move to the ears, top, and front of the Pom’s ruff.
- The dog’s tail area is next, finishing on the side and back areas.
- Brush a Pomeranian while you dry with a dog dryer.
- Use a pin brush while blowing the water out of your hair upward for a fully coated look.
Best Shampoo for Pomeranians?
What Is The Best Dog Shampoo for Pomeranians? I Use and Recommend:
- Evening Primrose Oil for relief of dry skin and itchiness
- gentle cleansers for safe weekly use
- delicious scent for long-lasting freshness
I think the type of shampoo used is a minor consideration unless this is your Best in Show Pomeranian having his bath the day before a big show. Always opting for a soothing oatmeal shampoo for dogs, not being shown.
The occasional use of good clarifying dog shampoo is also recommended. Bodybuilding shampoo is used on Pomeranian show dogs. For complete details on grooming a Pomeranian, refer to the Pomeranian Grooming Guide.

Pomeranian Puppy Grooming Tips
Dochlaggie Pomeranian puppies are taught from an early age to accept and enjoy grooming as part of their daily routine. I start Pomeranian puppy grooming at three weeks, gently caressing the puppy and brushing the hair forward with my hand.
At 4 to 5 weeks, a small, soft-bristled brush is introduced to brush the Pomeranian puppy’s coat forward gently. This early experience helps the puppy associate grooming with calm, positive attention. The sessions are kept very short — just a minute or two — to build confidence and trust.
By around 6 to 8 weeks of age, I begin introducing the pin brush and soft slicker brush, always using light, careful strokes. At this stage, the goal isn’t to achieve a perfect groom but to familiarize the puppy with the feel and sound of the brushes. I also start touching their paws, ears, and tail gently to accustom them to handling in all areas, which will make nail clipping, trimming, and show preparation much easier later on.
This gradual, patient approach ensures every Dochlaggie puppy grows up to view grooming as a soothing and enjoyable experience — an essential part of their care routine, rather than something to fear. Early, positive grooming training lays the foundation for a lifetime of stress-free coat maintenance and sets the puppy up for success both in the show ring and as a beloved companion.

How To Remove Knots From a Pomeranian’s Coat
A Pomeranian’s beautiful, long coat can easily become tangled during everyday play or activity. Even small tangles can quickly catch onto surrounding hairs, forming larger knots if not brushed out regularly. Dead hair and debris can also become trapped within these tangles, making them worse over time.
As a knot grows, it begins to pull on your Pom’s delicate skin, causing discomfort and even pain. When grooming isn’t done regularly, these tangles can tighten, especially after bathing or exposure to moisture, leading to painful skin irritation or, in severe cases, ulcers. I’ve seen mats so dense they were almost impossible to cut through, lying dangerously close to the skin.
Some owners try to avoid grooming because they dislike dealing with mats, but the sooner you address them, the easier and safer they are to remove. If a mat is smaller than your thumb, it can usually be worked out at home with patience and the right tools. However, if the tangles are large, tight, or close to the skin, it’s best to seek the help of a professional groomer. A Pomeranian’s skin is thinner and far more delicate than a human’s, so care and caution are essential.
For smaller tangles, use a mat breaker, mat rake, or a wide-toothed comb to loosen the knot gently. Always start from the outer edges and work slowly toward the skin. Avoid pulling, as it will only tighten the mat and cause pain.
For severe or deep mats, careful trimming with scissors may be necessary—but only if you are confident and can clearly see where the skin lies. When in doubt, stop and consult your groomer.
If Your Pomeranian Has Knots, Follow These Steps:
Stop if your Pom shows discomfort. If a mat is tight to the skin or causes pain, call your professional groomer for safe removal.
- Locate the problem areas. Check common trouble spots, such as behind the ears, under the front legs, around the thighs, and near the base of the tail.
- Brush the surrounding coat first. Removing loose and dead hair helps you isolate the tangled section.
- Use the right tool. Start with a mat breaker or rake, working slowly from the tips of the fur toward the base.
- Be patient and gentle. Keep your Pom calm—short, positive sessions are best. Offer reassurance and treats.
- Assess the mat. Some mats may appear severe, but they are easy to loosen once the top layer is broken up.
- Stop if your Pom shows discomfort. If a mat is tight to the skin or causes pain, call your professional groomer for safe removal.
Areas to Watch for Pomeranian Fur Knots and Tangles:
- Between the back legs.
- Matted dog hair behind the ears.
- Under the front legs.
- Alongside the back of your dog’s haunches.
- In the groin region.

Pomeranian Haircuts
Even though your Pomeranian has a thick, fluffy coat, he must never be shaved, even if the weather is hot and steamy. If you make the mistake of shaving his undercoat, it likely won’t grow back to how it was.
Your Pomeranian’s undercoat, which is soft fur, protects him from the sun’s harsh UV rays and prevents him from overheating. If you remove his natural protection, he risks sunburn and sunstroke.
There’s only one area of the dog’s coat where it’s wise to clip short: the fluffy bits surrounding his anus.
However, Poms are prone to accumulating bits of sticky feces around this part of their body, and if you don’t remove them, it quickly becomes unhygienic.
I provide details of the show Pomeranian grooming styles, trimming, and the teddy bear cut in the trimming section.
Tooth Care and Toe Nail Clipping
Brushing a Pomeranian’s teeth and clipping its toenails are parts of my regular grooming routine.
You must brush a Pomeranian’s teeth regularly and be careful because, like other toy breeds, he has tiny teeth wedged tightly into his jaw. This can lead to plaque buildup, which can in turn cause further issues, such as periodontal disease and gingivitis.

Preventing Pomeranian Eye Stains
Do Pomeranian dogs have eye stains? Unfortunately, yes, they can get them too! Prevent this by regularly wiping the eye area clean with makeup pads. Additionally, eye drops and other eye care products can help remove excessive staining.
Wipe a Pom’s eye area each day for these two reasons:
- To remove tiny pieces of debris that tend to cling to fine hairs around and in the eyes. This small debris can cause irritation (and sometimes even scratch their cornea).
- By wiping away any food bits or ‘sleep,’ dirt & dust, you not only help prevent tear staining by cleaning off dried basal tears, but also help prevent eye staining.
So, you want to ensure that your Pom’s nose and eyes stay clean. One way is to use a basic grooming wipe or a damp washcloth daily.
Take care not to let this area become too wet, as this can lead to staining problems in the future. In addition, specially designed eye wipes will gently clean without leaving any excess moisture behind.
I have an entire article on the causes of eye stains and how to remove them.

Pom Paw Care
You may not think about your Pomeranian’s paws, but they are essential. - 99.7% NATURAL ORIGIN FORMULA: Made with 99.7 percent natural origin ingredients and formulated without chemical detergents, phthalates, parabens, sulfates, artificial colorants, or dyes. Designed for routine dog skin and paw care.
- SOOTHING HONEY CONDITIONING: Includes honey to help condition the skin and support balanced pet pH levels. Helps maintain comfortable paw pads and nose surfaces during regular dog grooming and moisturizing routines.
- Made for dry, crusty, cracked noses: Formulated for tougher snout skin, not a paw balm repurposed for noses. Shea Butter and Kukui Nut Oil help soften, smooth, and deeply moisturize.
- For every dog, especially flat-faced breeds: All dogs can experience dry snouts from weather, environment, or age, but brachycephalic breeds like French Bulldogs, Pugs, Boxers, and Boston Terriers are more prone. Suitable for puppies, adults, and seniors.
- Ingredients you can read and trust: Kukui Nut Oil helps penetrate thicker nose texture, while Shea Butter adds rich moisture with natural sun-barrier properties. Coconut Oil, Hempseed Oil, Chamomile, and Rosemary provide gentle, plant-based nourishment.
- Simple daily routine, every season: Apply a thin layer 2–3 times daily to help maintain a softer, more moisturized snout. Reduce to once daily for maintenance. Supports the nose’s moisture barrier through cold winters, hot summers, and everyday conditions.
- Supports snout protection during outdoor time: Shea Butter provides mild, natural sun-barrier properties to help support your dog’s nose during walks, hikes, and sunny days.
Pomeranian Nose Care
Dogs can get various nose problems, from dryness and chapping to peeling. One common issue in Pomeranians is the “winter nose,” which is caused by their limited sun exposure during the winter months.
To help protect your pup against winter noses, spend a little time in the sun with your dog each day. Your Pomeranian can suffer from a dry nose due to excessive sun exposure or indoor heating set too high. Prevent dry and cracked noses by applying a natural-based nose balm at least once daily.

Grooming Mistakes to Avoid
Even the most devoted Pomeranian owners can make grooming errors without realizing it. Understanding what not to do is just as important as knowing the correct grooming techniques. Avoiding these common mistakes will help keep your Pom’s coat healthy, full, and free of damage.
1. Shaving or Clipping the Double Coat
A Pomeranian’s coat should never be shaved short. The dense undercoat and protective guard hairs work together to regulate temperature and protect the skin. Shaving disrupts this natural balance and can cause permanent coat damage, known as post-clipping alopecia, where the fur may never regrow correctly.
2. Skipping Regular Brushing
Brushing once in a while isn’t enough for this breed. If you allow loose hair to build up, it quickly forms mats and tangles that pull on your Pom’s delicate skin. Regular brushing — ideally every day or at least three times a week — prevents matting and keeps the coat healthy and breathable.
3. Using the Wrong Tools
Inexpensive or subpar grooming tools can cause discomfort and even damage the coat. Avoid harsh metal combs or slicker brushes designed for coarse-haired breeds. Instead, use a soft pin brush, a slicker brush for fine areas, and a metal comb with rounded teeth for finishing touches.
4. Over-Bathing or Using the Wrong Shampoo
Bathing too frequently or using harsh products can strip your Pom’s coat of its natural oils, leading to dryness, itching, and breakage. Always use a high-quality, gentle dog shampoo and conditioner designed for double-coated breeds. For most Poms, bathing every 3–4 weeks is ideal.
5. Skipping the Drying Process
Allowing a Pomeranian’s coat to air dry leads to tangles and flat, lifeless fur. Always use a cool or warm air pet dryer, brushing through the coat as you dry to restore the natural “stand-off” look. Avoid hot air settings, which can burn delicate skin and damage the coat.
6. Ignoring Ears, Eyes, and Nails
A well-groomed Pom isn’t just about the coat. Check and clean your ears regularly to prevent infections. Wipe tear stains gently to keep your face clean. Trim your nails every 2–3 weeks to ensure comfort and proper foot structure.
7. Rushing the Grooming Session
Pomeranians respond best to calm, positive experiences. Rushing through grooming or forcing a frightened puppy can make them anxious or resistant. Take your time, use gentle handling, and offer treats and praise so your Pom learns that grooming is a safe and enjoyable experience.
Proper grooming is both an art and a science. By avoiding these common mistakes, you’ll protect your Pom’s luxurious coat, maintain their comfort, and strengthen the bond you share. A little patience and the right technique will keep your Pomeranian looking — and feeling — absolutely stunning.
Pomeranian Grooming Tips Conclusion
You have now learned the basics of grooming a Pomeranian. However, if you want to know more about how often Pomeranians need grooming, what type of brush is best for their fur, or why shedding happens in this breed, we can help!
Pomeranians need grooming every 3-4 weeks. Groomers recommend brushing your dog daily and bathing them when they become dirty (once a week). Be sure to use the right Pomeranian grooming tools for the job!
Most professional groomers recommend brushing your dog daily to remove dead hair, prevent tangles, and maintain a full and healthy coat. Bathing can be done every week or when your Pom becomes dirty, using a mild, breed-appropriate shampoo and conditioner.
It’s equally important to use the correct grooming tools. A pin brush, slicker brush, metal comb, and quality detangling spray are essential for keeping that beautiful double coat in top condition. Avoid harsh tools or human hair products, as they can damage the coat and irritate your Pom’s sensitive skin.
Grooming isn’t just about keeping your dog beautiful — it’s a vital part of their overall health and happiness. Regular grooming sessions stimulate the skin, improve circulation, and help you spot any issues early, such as tangles, fleas, or dry patches. Even more, it strengthens the bond between you and your Pom, turning what might seem like a chore into a shared moment of calm affection.
With the right tools, patience, and gentle handling, grooming a Pomeranian becomes an enjoyable ritual that ensures your fluffy companion always looks and feels their best.
